NIOXX Project
William J. Merrell is a member of
NIOXX, LLC’s management committee.
He is also a founding partner of MerrellKatsouros LLP, chairman and principal scientist of The Institute
for Oceans and Coasts, professor of marine sciences at Texas A&M University at Galveston, and president
of Merrell Historic Properties, Inc.; a corporation that develops and preserves historic properties. He
has served as president of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment, vice
chancellor for Strategic Programs of The Texas A&M University System, vice president for Research Policy of
Texas A&M University, president of Texas A&M University at Galveston, and Assistant Director of the National
Science Foundation. Merrell received the Distinguished Member Award for Research Achievement from the Texas
A&M University Chapter of Sigma XI, the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Geosciences and Earth Resources
Council, and the Distinguished Service Award of the National Science Foundation for “his lasting impact on the
course of American science.” Dr. Merrell holds a BS and a MA, physics, Sam Houston State University; and a PhD,
oceanography, Texas A&M University.
John R. Schwartz is a professor in the department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University and in the Marine Biology department at Texas A&M in Galveston. Dr. Schwartz was head of the department of Marine Biology from 1983 to 1987. His research funding has totaled $2.6 million from sources such as ONR, NOAA, NSF, DOE, FDA, ISSC and State of Texas Advanced Technology Program. Dr. Schwartz is a founding member of
NIOXX, LLC
and managed some of the early nitric oxide work at A&M.
Dr. Alejandru T. Balaban is a Professor of Chemistry at Texas A&M University at Galveston. He is an established organic chemist, who assisted in the invention of the patented
NIOXX technology. He has authored 10 books, published over 600 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and holds 25 patents. In 1994, he was awarded the Herman Skolnik Award of the American Chemical Society. Originally from Romania, Dr. Balaban is now a permanent US resident. Dr. Balaban actively advises
NIOXX on additional chemicals that may be added to increase efficacy of the gel technology. Dr. Balaban pioneered the use of Pluronic® as a novel gelling agent.
Dr. Ferid Murad serves on the
NIOXX, LLC management committee and is currently developing research protocols for Phase I animal testing. He is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Integrative Biology, Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. Prior to this he was Vice President, Pharmaceutical Research & Development, and Corporate Officer, Abbott Laoratories, Abbott Park, Illinois. In 1998 Dr. Murad
received the Nobel Prize for his pioneering research with nitric oxide.
Dr. Robert E. Garfield is professor in the department of Physiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Director of Reproductive Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Dr. Garfield is a
NIOXX inventor and has authored approximately 30 journal articles. He has received research funding from NIH
and the World Health Organization for several different projects.
Mr. Rai Kelso, CEO of OBT Corp. He is an active participant in the development of
NIOXX’s corporate strategy and advises the company with regard to external grant and venture capital opportunities.
Dr. William Seitz is professor and Head of the Department of Marine Sciences. His PhD is in chemical physics. Early work on NO was conducted in Dr. Seitz’s laboratory and he is an inventor of the technology. He serves on the management committee and was one of the original founders of
NIOXX.
Mr. Randall Stewart is an inventor of the
NIOXX gel technology. He currently is active in vessel chartering in Florida, but remains an active member.
